Introducing… my first (semi)legal Crossword Puzzle!!
Choose your own adventure, and have fun!!!
In early July I decided to start building crosswords. How hard could it be? TURNS OUT. So through weeks and weeks of noodling around, trying to do this thing, I came up with brainstorming systems, notetaking methods, and an order of operations that work for me. Start to finish, Puzzle #1 (below!) took maybe two weeks. When I finished? ESTACTIC. It was only after I’d finished that I realized I’d broken an American-standard rule ( THUS “semi” legal), BUT STILL I could not be more overjoyed. Mad respect for the people that make these as a career.
So what are the American Crossword Standard Rules?
No two-letter words, few three-letter words (done!)
The puzzle must be rotationally symmetrical (done!)
Every letter must be checked both across and down (THAT’S IMPOSSIBLE, BRUH)
As for the clues: tenses and abbreviations and prepositions must match the answers. If the answer is, say, SATs, the clue would have to be something like “Exam for H.S. juniors and seniors,” because the “H.S.” indicates the answer will be an acronym. And so forth.
SO NOW……. PUZZLE #1!!!!!!
Theme is: HORROR FILMS, BABEY!!
Because this is such a niche theme (do not expect Nightmare on Elm Street to show up… that’s child’s play… (no Child’s Play isn’t one of the movies, either)), I’ve created THREE SETS of clues!
PURPLE SOLVER: “I have opinions on Hooper and Raimi and Barker and Roth and Wan and Astor and West and”
RED SOLVER: “I stay up to date with the film buzz”
GREEN SOLVER: “Is Halloween the one with the Scream mask?”
You can solve Puzzle #1 no matter your familiarity with the genre. PURPLE clues only tell you the year and title length of the movie, RED gives you information about the movie plot, and GREEN clues have nothing to do with the movie at all! Think of it like Charades—I have you guess the specific word using that word’s definition. No horror familiarity needed.
HERE’S HOW IT WORKS: Click one of the links above; it will take you to a separate blog page with the crossword. From there, you can print it out, OR, HOW COOL, you can fill it out online.
OKAY. CHOOSE YOUR OWN ADVENTURE AND HAVE FUN!!
